Lewis & Clark: The National Bicentennial Exhibition

This web site both promotes and compliments the major traveling exhibition of the same name. Terra Incognita worked closely with the Missouri Historical Society to develop a multiple-phase online project. The first two phases redesigned an existing promotional web site and added dozens of extensive lesson plans. The third phase added a rich online exhibition using the materials developed for the physical exhibition.

The online exhibition provides multiple entries into the subject. An innovative multimedia journey map combines Euro-American and American Indian cartographic traditions to tell the story of the expedition. Visitors can also explore ten thematic exhibits that examine the cultural landscape traversed by Lewis and Clark. Finally, visitors can search through over 350 objects in an artifacts gallery (which can be expanded and updated by the client through a custom administration tool).

  • “We entered the project with an incomplete understanding of the possibilities. At every step Terra Incognita pushed to achieve a site that was more interactive, more imaginative, and more multi-dimensional than we had expected. This web site brings scattered national treasures and the research behind them to the public for the first time in the 200 years since the expedition. But it does far more. More than any other medium, it presents history as it truly is: a collage of sources and a dialogue of voices. That achievement is entirely due to Terra Incognita’s talent and dedication.”

”Very nice, rich site with good use of possibilities of state of the art Web techniques.”
